$5000 Significant 2D Award – Casuarina Landscape with Coffee Van by Sandra Guy
The Significant 2D Award for 2018 was Sandra Guy from Kingscliff, NSW, with her piece Casuarina Landscape with Coffee Van, an oil on linen.
Casuarina Landscape with Coffee Van is one of a series of works titled, the “Suburban Sublime”, highlighting the pressures of rural and suburban growth on the natural environment of the Tweed Coast region. Ms Guy has exhibited widely since 1982.
“The Tweed Coast, between Byron Bay and the Gold Coast is a unique meeting of the rural, natural and suburban environments of the Northern Rivers Region of the North Coast of NSW. This area has recently experienced unprecedented population growth along with a boom in new housing development. This painting is one of a series of works titled, the “Suburban Sublime”, highlighting the pressures of rural and suburban growth on the natural environment of the Region. In this painting two thirds sky, representing the natural environment dominates, however the lone Coffee van man, servicing early morning workers and the new population of Casuarina heading off to work on the Gold Coast or Brisbane strikes a lonely figure, evoking vulnerability. Whist the light from his van is inviting, the clouds and shadows have sharp edges. There is now a building where this coffee van stands so this painting and the others in the series are documenting the area as it undergoes significant change. On another level this painting continues my exploration of the ‘sublime’ in rural or suburban environments.”
